We recommend starting out wearing your retainer consistently; once you’ve got the hang of it, you can shift to nights only.

How long do I have to wear a retainer?
Every patient’s retainer plan is a little different, but most people begin with full time wear before transitioning to evenings only. We like to remind patients, “Wear your retainers for as long as you want to keep your teeth straight.” Making retainer wear part of your routine is the best way to protect your new smile for years to come.
One or two days is no big deal, you won’t slide down from the summit. But just like endurance training, if you miss a longer period of time your teeth may start to shift back to their earlier state. If this happens and your retainer no longer fits, come see us and we can discuss your options.
Use regular hand soap and cool water. Never use toothpaste because it can scratch them and make them cloudy and gross.
